Rekordbox can now stream straight from Spotify. That is genuinely useful for planning and practice, but a streamed track is not a file you own, and that difference bites hardest in the one place you cannot afford a surprise: the gig. Here is what the integration actually does, where it breaks, and how to turn a Spotify playlist into a set you control.
What the Spotify integration actually does
AlphaTheta switched it on in two stages. On 24 September 2025, rekordbox for Mac and Windows gained Spotify playback, and in December 2025 the same support arrived in rekordbox for iOS and Android. Spotify confirmed the rollout across a large list of markets, alongside similar deals with other DJ apps.
The mechanics are simple. With a Spotify Premium account connected, you browse Spotify's catalog and your own Spotify playlists from inside Rekordbox and load those tracks next to files from your local library. Anything you build in the Spotify app shows up ready to load. On supported hardware you can drop a streamed track into a Performance mode deck just like a local file, so the barrier to trying an unfamiliar tune during prep effectively disappears.
For crate-digging and set-building, that is a real win. You can audition a track the moment you hear about it, sketch a transition, and decide whether it earns a place before you spend any money.
What breaks the moment you rely on it
The catch is that you are streaming, not playing files, and Rekordbox is honest about the limits.
- No internet, no music. You need a stable connection to stream, and there is no offline caching. Venue Wi-Fi that drops mid-set, a dead phone hotspot, or a basement with no signal takes your Spotify tracks with it.
- No stems on streamed tracks. Rekordbox's stem separation does not work on Spotify tracks, so the acapella and instrumental tricks you lean on for live edits are off the table for anything streamed.
- You do not own it. Streaming catalogs change. Tracks get pulled over licensing disputes, regional rights, or an artist's decision, and a playlist that was complete last week can have grey, unplayable rows tonight. There is nothing to back up and nothing to fall back on.
None of this makes the integration bad. It makes it a practice and planning tool rather than a performance foundation. DJ TechTools' coverage lands in the same place: convenient, but not something to build a paid gig on.
The rule that survives every gig
Treat streaming as the audition room and owned files as the set. Use Spotify inside Rekordbox to discover and shortlist, then make sure everything you actually plan to play exists as a file on your drive, analysed, cued, and ready to run with the laptop in airplane mode if it has to.
The practical workflow: build the shortlist in Spotify because that is where discovery is fastest, then convert that shortlist into music you own before the night. That conversion step is exactly where a library manager earns its keep, because doing it by hand for a 60-track playlist is miserable.
Turning a Spotify playlist into files you own with Lexicon
This is the gap Lexicon is built to close, and it does it without pretending a streamed track is something it is not.
Track Matcher takes a playlist and tells you what you already have. Per the Track Matcher manual, it reads from text files, CSV files, and playlists from Spotify, Beatport, Tidal, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube, then compares that list against your Lexicon library using fuzzy matching (with an optional strict mode for tighter results). You point it at your Spotify shortlist and it separates the tracks you own from the tracks you are missing. The tracks it cannot find can be sent back out to Spotify, Tidal, or Beatport as a new playlist, saved in a dedicated Lexicon playlist folder, so your "still need to buy" list is one click from being usable again.
Once you know what is missing, Store Links finds where to buy it. The Store Links feature can load a playlist straight from Spotify or Tidal and then search Beatport, Apple Music (iTunes), Bandcamp, and Traxsource for each track, showing pricing where it is publicly available and converting currencies for you. It is deliberately thorough rather than instant, roughly five seconds per track, but it replaces the tedious job of pasting titles into four store search boxes one at a time. The result is a shopping list of buyable, downloadable versions of the tracks a Spotify playlist only lets you rent.
There is a matching move in the other direction. If you want to hand a friend or a client a Spotify version of a set you own, right-click a playlist and choose Share, then Send To. As the Share manual explains, this does not upload your files, it matches your tracks by artist and title to Spotify's catalog and builds a new playlist, then hands you a report of anything it could not match. Clean metadata makes those matches far more reliable, so run Smart Fixes on the playlist first to tidy titles and artist fields before you send.
The bottom line
Spotify in Rekordbox is a great addition to how you find and test music. It is a poor place to store the music you are paid to play. Keep the two jobs separate:
- Discover and audition in Spotify, inside Rekordbox, with all the convenience streaming gives you.
- Own what you play. Before the gig, run your Spotify shortlist through Lexicon's Track Matcher to see what you already have, use Store Links to buy the rest from Beatport, iTunes, Bandcamp, or Traxsource, and analyse those files in Rekordbox.
- Rehearse the failure case. Pull the internet and confirm your set still plays start to finish from local files. If it does, streaming was a bonus and not a dependency.
Do that, and the Spotify integration becomes exactly what it should be: a faster way to find great records, backed by a library that shows up whether the Wi-Fi does or not.
