Harmonic mixing has a reputation for needing a music degree. It does not. The Camelot Wheel turns key matching into a clock face, and once your tracks are tagged correctly, Lexicon flags the compatible ones for you. Here is the whole system with none of the theory.
The wheel is just a clock
Picture a clock face with the numbers 1 to 12 around the edge. Every position has two rings: an inner ring and an outer ring. That is the entire Camelot Wheel.
- The number (1 to 12) tells you where a track sits on the clock.
- The letter tells you which ring: A is the inner ring (minor keys), B is the outer ring (major keys).
So a track labelled 8A sits at 8 o'clock on the inner ring, and 5B sits at 5 o'clock on the outer ring. You never have to know that 8A happens to be A minor. The number and the letter are the only things you touch.
Why does this help? Because keys that actually sound good together sit right next to each other on the wheel. Harmonic mixing is nothing more than moving short distances around the clock. That is the trick, and it is why so many DJs tag their whole library with these codes.
The three moves that cover almost every mix
You can get through a full set with three rules. Learn these and you have covered the vast majority of clean, in-key transitions.
- Same code, perfect match. Mixing
8Ainto another8Ais always safe, because it is the same key. When two tracks share a code, you can layer them for long blends without any clash. - Step one number, keep the letter. Move one hour clockwise or counter-clockwise and stay on the same ring:
8Ato9A, or8Ato7A. Neighbours on the wheel are a perfect fifth or fourth apart, which is the smoothest possible move between two different keys. - Switch the ring, keep the number. Same number, swap the letter:
8Ato8B. This jumps between a minor key and its relative major. Nothing clashes, but the mood shifts, so it is a great way to lift a floor out of a darker minor run or bring it back down.
There is one bonus move worth knowing: the energy boost. Skip up two numbers on the same ring, for example 8A into 10A. It is not as seamless as a neighbour mix, but it noticeably raises the intensity, which is handy for building toward a peak. Use it sparingly and on the drop, not under a delicate vocal.
That is it. Same, step one, switch the ring, and the occasional two-step lift. You do not need to memorise anything else to mix in key.
Reading Lexicon's labels: Open Key, not Camelot
Here is where a lot of DJs get tripped up. Open your library in Lexicon and you will not see 8A, you will see something like 8m. That is not a bug.
Due to licensing restrictions, Camelot notation is not available in Lexicon. Instead it uses Open Key, which the manual describes as "the same as Camelot but with different letters and no licensing restrictions." The wheel is identical. The only change is that the inner-ring A becomes m (minor) and the outer-ring B becomes d (major).
Every rule above still works, letter for letter. In Lexicon's own words, its Harmonically Compatible logic treats 10m as compatible with 11m (step one number) and with 10d (switch the ring). Same wheel, same moves, different characters on the label.
If you specifically want Camelot-style labels in your Key column, you have options. Go to Settings > General > Key Format, where you can choose from:
- Open Key
- Original key
- Open Key with original key
- Musical key
- Musical key with original key
- Custom keys
- Custom keys with original key
Pick Custom keys and click Edit Custom Keys to define your own notation for each Open Key value, so you can map the labels to whatever you are used to reading. There is also an Add leading zero option, which sorts your keys correctly (01A, 02A ... 10A, 11A) instead of the broken 1A, 10A, 11A, 2A order you get without it.
None of this works if your keys are wrong
Harmonic mixing is only as good as your key tags, and key detection is genuinely hard. Lexicon gives you two ways to get it right, both in the Analyzer:
- The built-in analyzer, which is fast and needs no extra setup.
- OpenKeyScan, a separate free application from the same developer. You download it, keep it running in the background, and Lexicon uses it for key analysis instead of the built-in engine. The manual states it delivers "results that match industry leading paid analysis software," and it is 100 percent free.
Already have keys from another app? Lexicon can convert them. It reads key values from Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor and VirtualDJ, as well as Camelot codes and plain musical notes, and converts them into Open Key or Musical key notation. Worth noting: not every musical key can be converted, so it pays to re-analyse anything that looks off.
Let Lexicon walk the wheel for you
Once your library is tagged, you rarely need to picture the clock at all. Load a track into the Lexicon player and the track browser marks every harmonically compatible track with a small music note next to its key. Sort or scan your list and the in-key options are already flagged.
How strict that matching is comes down to one setting, Key Mixing Mode, in Settings > General:
- Harmonically Compatible uses the traditional rules, for example
10mto11mor10mto10d. This is the tight, classic set of moves from earlier. - Fuzzy Key Mixing expands the net to adjacent numbers in both directions, for example
10mto9m/9dor10mto11m/11d. You get more candidates, at the cost of some transitions being looser than a purist would allow.
A practical workflow: set your Key Format to add the leading zero, sort a crate by the Key column so tracks group by wheel position, and lean on the music-note indicator while you build. You end up mixing in key without ever consciously doing the math, which is exactly the point of the wheel.
Harmonic mixing is not music theory. It is a clock, three moves, and clean key tags. Get those in place and the Camelot Wheel stops being a diagram you memorise and becomes something Lexicon quietly handles for you.
